US Open Women's Tennis Champions

Chris Evert and Steffi Graf were arguably two of the very best on-court practitioners the world has ever seen. They continue to dominate in the record books, and in current times there has been no-one to dull the shine of their huge successes of the 70s and 80s.

Known as the "Ice Maiden" of tennis, the attractive, amiable Chris Evert will remain indelibly in the annals of history with the finest singles win/loss record of all time - an awesome 1309 - 146. It remains the best of any professional in world tennis - past and present.

She holds the record for the most French Open singles titles with seven, claimed six US Open singles wins, won at the Wimbledon Championships three times and was victorious at the Australian Open on two occasions.

In 1971 at the age of 16 she made her US Open debut, and stunned tennis aficionados with her storming performances. The US Open women's tennis champion made it through to the semi-finals where she succumbed to the wiles and experience of the celebrated Billie Jean King.

She too won the US Open singles title on both clay and hard court, and from 1971 to her retirement in 1989 she never failed to reach less than the quarterfinals of the New York event. In total she won six titles, was a finalist on three occasions, reaching the semi finals eight times and the quarters, twice.

Steffi Graf

Steffi Graf has to be the most successful women's tennis player of all time. She won 22 Grand Slam singles titles - just two away from Margaret Court Smith's all-time record of 24, and lifted 107 singles titles in her career. Only Martina Navratilova with 167 wins and Chris Evert with 154 wins, surpass her.

The US Open women's tennis Champion is the only player to have achieved the coveted 'Golden Slam' - all four Grand Slam singles titles and an Olympic gold medal! She was ranked the world number one on the WTA ranking for a total of 377 weeks and is the only player in history to have won all four Grand Slams at least four times.

She claimed the All England Championships seven times, the French Open six times, the US Open five times and the Australian Open on four occasions.
