US Open Thoughts
The US Open is played on hard courts and is the last Grand Slam of the season. The actual surface is DecoTurf which is a particularly fast surface, faster than most hard courts, and it favours players who are heavy servers and depend to some extent on the serve and volley.
Over recent years the most successful male US Open players have been Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer each of them have winning the title on five occasions. In the women’s, Chris Evert has won six titles, the last one being in 1982, though the most successful female player was Molla Bjurstedt Mallory who won eight titles between 1915 and 1926.
The 2012 tournament finally gave Britain’s Andy Murray his long awaited and well deserved first Grand Slam victory making him the first British player since Fred Perry to win a Grand Slam.
In a particularly exciting final he beat Serbia’s Novak Djokovic 7–6, 7–5, 2–6, 3–6, 6–2 in what turned out to be a marathon match with both players hitting the peak of their abilities. The first tie break went to a total of 22 games.
The Women’s title was won by Serena Williams, giving her, her fourth US Open Crown.
