Wozniaki claims Pilot Pen title in New Haven
Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki claimed her second consecutive WTA Tour title on Saturday, as she defeated first seed Anna Chakvetadze in the final of the Pilot Pen tennis tournament.
Chakvetadze, who had never lost in a WTA final prior to Saturday's match, won the first set of the marathon encounter. Wozniacki refused to go down without a fight, and took advantage of Chakvetadze's weak second serve to win the second set.
The final set saw both players battling from the baseline, with Wozniacki's powerful ground-strokes proving the difference between the two players as the Dane took the third set to record a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory.
It's amazing," Wozniacki a delighted Wozniacki said. "Everything is just going so fast. I'm just enjoying every second of it. You never know when it's going to end or if it's going to end soon or not."
Ann Chakvetadze blamed fatigue for her failure to claim an eighth WTA title, telling reporters: "I just didn't recover from yesterday match. I finished quite late. Played three sets and didn't really sleep well. I just didn't have power especially in the third set.”
