Federer takes 5th US Open title
Roger Federer made an overdue return to his dangerous best on Monday, defeating Andy Murray in straight sets to win his 5th consecutive US Open title.
Andy Murray never looked like causing an upset against a focused and resolute Federer, who put his inexperienced opponent away in just over an hour and a half to win 6-2, 7-5, 6-2.
"I felt like I was invincible for a while again," Federer said after the match. "That's how you want to finish a tournament. This is a very special moment in my career. To take this one home is incredible. It means the world to me.”
Federer's win at the US Open won't be enough to help him regain the top spot in men's tennis. However, he has taken a step closer to breaking Pete Sampras' record of 14 grand slam victories by claiming his 13th grand slam title.
"One thing is for sure. I'm not going to stop at 13," Federer said. "That would be terrible."
Murray, meanwhile, was unusually composed both during and after a match where he rarely had a chance to shine.
"He made very few mistakes," Murray said. "The times I played him before he had given me a few free points. I missed a lot of first serves and he was able to dictate a lot of the points on second serves."
