Djokovic defeats Roddick in tense quarterfinal
Novak Djokovic overcame several niggling injuries on Thursday to eliminate America's last US Open hope, Andy Roddick, in the quarterfinals.
Djokovic, clearly unamused by comments Roddick had made regarding his health prior to the match, took four sets to knock the American out of the tournament. Roddick fought back bravely from a two set deficit before going down in a fourth set tiebreaker to lose 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5).
"That's not nice, anyhow, to say in front of this crowd that I have 16 injuries and that I'm faking," Djokovic said after an ill-tempered match which saw Roddick smash his racquet and Djokovic share words with the crowd.
The two players reportedly met after the match to iron out their differences, but Djokovic will go forward knowing that he won few fans at Flushing Meadows on his way to setting up a semi-final with Roger Federer.
"I figure if you're going to joke and imitate other people and do the whole deal, then you should take it. Listen, if someone makes fun of me I'm most likely going to laugh," Roddick said of his opponent. "I'm sorry he took it that way. ... I don't think I was over the line. It wasn't my intention, and, you know, I'm sorry he felt that way. Maybe I did him a favor tonight."
