While Serena needed only two sets to beat her sister, she was pushed all the way with both sets going to tiebreakers in a classic Williams on Williams clash.

It was eventually a number of uncharacteristic unforced errors that cost Venus Williams the match, as she was eliminated 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (9-7).

"It felt like the final of US Open. I can't believe I won. Wow," Serena said at the conlcusion of the match. "It was difficult because she is such a great player."

Serena Williams will play Russia's Dinara Safina in the semi-finals of the 2008 US Open. The 6th seed defeated Flavia Pennetta 6-2, 6-3 in the day's other quarterfinal, taking a step closer to her second grand slam final appearance.

"Finally I am happy with myself because I did what I had to do," Safina said. "I was aggressive on the court. I was following balls every time. Today I finally played my game."
