Elena Dementieva booked her place opposite Jankovic in the US open semi-finals with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Switzerland's Patty Schynder. Dementieva's match against Jankovic will mark her fourth appearance in the semi-finals of the US Open.

"I have to improve my game if I want to go through to the final," Dementieva said. "I want to attack more. I want to be more aggressive on the court. You can't play defensive if you want to be number one."

With Ana Ivanovic certain to be demoted form her world number one ranking after the US Open, Dementieva, Jankovic and Serena Williams are all in with a chance of finishing the US Open at the top of the WTA world rankings.
