Nishikori sends Ferrer packing
Kei Nishikori became the first Japanese men's singles player to reach the round of 16 at the US Open yesterday, defeating world number four David Ferrer in a marathon five set encounter.
Nishikori surged to an early lead, winning the first two sets before Ferrer fought back to force the match into a fifth set. The match went down to the wire before Nishikori finally put Federer away on his third match point.
"I still can't believe it," Nishikori said after his historic 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 2-6, 7-5 win. "I was playing great. This is the biggest win for me.”
Rafael Nadal, meanwhile, never seemed under threat in his match against Viktor Troicki. The Spaniard won the last 11 games to to defeat the Serbian 6-4, 6-3, 6-0.
“I have started playing better," Nadal said. "Today I served very well. I have more confidence and I hope to continue to improve my tennis. I know I have to keep improving my tennis if I want to win."
Two other seeds joined David Ferrer one the sidelines, as James Blake fell to Mardy Fish 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) while David Nalbandian perished at the hands of Gael Monfils in a 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 defeat.
