The shock upset was produced by a combination of brilliant serving by Coin and a virtual meltdown by Ivanovic which saw her rack up 34 unforced errors as she lost 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to a tennis player ranked 188 in the world.

Coin will come up against compatriot Amelie Mauresmo in the third round after Mauresmo dispatched Estonia's Kaia Kanepi 2-6, 6-4, 6-0.

The Williams sisters stayed on course for a quarterfinal collision as both won their second round games with ease. Serena swept aside Russia's Elena Vesnina 6-1, 6-1 while Venus looked equally imperious as she blew Rossana De Los Rios off the court in a 6-0, 6-3 victory.

Dinara Safina also looked in good form in the wake of her silver medal at the Olympics. The Russian defeated Italy's Roberta Vinci 6-4, 6-3 to join compatriot Nadia Petrova in the third round of the 2008 US Open ladies singles draw.
