Cirstea put up a fight in the first set, forcing a tie-break, before 2004 US Open champion Kuznetsova crushed her in the second set to record a 7-6 (3), 6-1 victory.

“Here you feel special, like I've made it here," Kuznetsova said after the match. "It's an amazing feeling - I just play much more confident."

Jelena Jankovic was also in action on Wednesday, as she took on Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden in a tough three set encounter. It took 3 hours for Jankovic, still feeling the lingering effects of a knee injury, to put down the Swedish player 6-3, 6-7 (5), 7-5.

"That was a really tough one," said Jankovic, who is yet to reach the final of a grand slam tournament. "As you can see, I am completely out of breath. She really pushed me to the limit."

Kuznetsova and Jankovic will be joined in the next round of the US Open by Olympic gold medalist Elena Dementieva, who romped to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over France's Pauline Parmentier.

Vera Zvonareva was the highest seeded casualty of the day. The Russian 8th seed was eliminated from the US Open in a 6-3, 6-3 defeat to Tatiana Perebiynis.
