US Open Men's Doubles Winners

Simon Aspeli of Sweden and Julian Knowle (L) of Austria celebrates with the trophy after their 7-5, 6-4 win against Lukas Dlouhy of the Czech Republic and Pavel Vizner of the Czech Republic during the Men's Doubles Final on day twelve of the 2007 U.S. Open at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on September 7, 2007 in the Flushing neighborhood of the Queens borough of New York City.

The most successful men's doubles tandem at the US Open since 1968 has been that of Bob Lutz and Stan Smith. The long-time partners from the United States were regarded as one of the most notable doubles teams of all time.

Apart from winning the US Open a record four times, they were runners-up in 1979 to another very successful pairing, that of John McEnroe and Peter Fleming. Only John McEnroe, with two different partners, has been able to match their open era record.

Lutz and Smith won 36 doubles titles together, and apart from their four US Open Grand Slams, they were successful at the Australian Open in 1970. They reached the finals at the French Open in 1974 and the Wimbledon Championships in 1974, 1980 and 1981.

Smith was also a very successful singles player - he won the US Open in 1971 and the Championships at the All England Club in 1972.

John McEnroe and Peter Fleming also deserve their place in the annals of tennis history. As the humble Fleming once said, "The best doubles pair in the world is John McEnroe and anyone."

Together they won an impressive 57 doubles titles, including four at the Wimbledon Championships (1979, 1981, 1983 & 1984) and three at the US Open - 1979, 1981 and 1983. McEnroe claimed his fourth US Open doubles title with Mark Woodforde in 1989.

The 'Woodies', Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde, claimed the championships in 1995 and 1996, and this is after they reached the finals of the event in 1994. When Woodforde retired, Woodbridge picked up his final US Open Grand Slam together with new partner, Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman in 2003.

Current world number ones, Bob and Mike Bryan have never really taken the US Open by the scruff of the neck. Although Flushing Meadows is the US Open men's doubles winners' home turf, they have only ever managed to lift the title twice, in 2008 and 2005. In 2003 they were runners-up to Bjorkman and Woodbridge.

To date the Bryans have won the Australian Open twice (2006 & 2007), the French Open once in 2003 and the Wimbledon Championships in 2006.
