US Open Men's Tennis Champions

Over the 126 years of the US Open, a few powerful men have set and broken records. We pay homage to two of these spirited performers of the Open Era - the current world number one, Roger Federer and the formidable John McEnroe.

Both these men hold US Open records post 1968:

• John McEnroe with the most wins in all competitions - eight (four singles titles and four doubles titles)
• John McEnroe with the most doubles win - four (with two different partners)
• Roger Federer with the most consecutive wins - four

Roger Federer

Roger Federer has to be one of the most productive and successful tennis stars of the 21^st century. At the tender age of 26 he has already claimed a significant number of Grand Slam singles titles - three Australian Open wins, five titles at the All England Club and an awesome four consecutive US Open crowns, twelve in total.

Add four Tennis Masters Series Cups and 14 ATP Masters Series titles, and in a nutshell you have the resume of a genius. What makes this US Open men's tennis champion so intimidating is that he seems to be streets ahead of his nearest rivals, and improving all the time.

Although his 2007 record was a tad down on his 2004, 2005 and 2006 performances, he still boasts an overall win percentage of 88% for the year. He played fewer tournaments in 2007 - just 16, but walked away with the title on eight occasions and was runner-up four times. He pocketed an unbelievable $10 130 620 for the year.

Federer has been impressive at Flushing Meadows over the years - his worst performance came in 2000 when he was knocked out in the third round, but since then he has reached the 4^th round or won the event. His career win/loss record in New York is a pleasing 38/4, and his total career win/loss record stands at an astounding 138/22.

He has claimed the record for the most consecutive wins at Flushing Meadows, and only Richard Sears in the early 1880s has the better of him with seven straight victories. Odds are that the Swiss Maestro will again be in the record books, and that is with a fifth back-to-back win at the 2008 US Open.

John McEnroe

Former world number one, John McEnroe, will in all probability be best remembered for his passionate on-court temper, his ongoing tiffs with umpires, linesmen and ball boys and his marathon matches with Swedish tennis legend, Bjorn Borg.

McEnroe won 17 Grand Slam titles in his long career - seven singles, nine doubles and one mixed doubles crown. He played at the US Open from 1977 until 1992 and his career win/loss record at Flushing Meadows stands at 66-2.

He claimed four singles titles, was runner-up once, reached the semi-finals on three occasions and reached the quarterfinals once. He added a further four US Open doubles titles to his playing record.
