US Open Betting Tips
Men's Singles
Roger Federer was the deserved antepost favourite in the US Open betting markets heading into the event.
Federer has claimed theUS Open title ever year since 2004 with relative ease. Not one final has gone the full distance of five sets, truly remarkable when you consider that the other finalists include the great Andre Agassi, former world number ones, Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt and the current world number three, Serb, Novak Djokovic.
At the age of 27 Federer is at the peak of his career, and a sound US Open betting tip is to back Fed ahead of the cohort of wannabees who're unlikely to take the Swiss down on his preferred surface. Federer is also the kind of man that will elevate his game a notch or two when he is out hunting a record, and victory at the US Open will mean that he will break the career records of the best of the two legends of the game, Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors. It is highly unlikely that he will allow anyone in to spoil his party.
Flushing Meadows sports an acrylic hard court surface, and when you look at Federer's win loss record on hard courts, it is difficult to see him come up second best. In 2007 he won 44 matches and lost six on hard courts, and his career stats are even more disconcerting should you be a pretender to his throne - 326-67.
Women's Singles
The women's singles event in New York will probably be a more open and competitive affair. Defending champion Serena Williams returns to the Arthur Ashe Stadium in 2009 in peak form.
Serena had a decent season in 2008, finishing as runner up to Venus Williams at Wimbledon before partnering her sister to claim the women's doubles title. Further grand slam titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon in 2009 suggest that Serena Williams is the player to beat in the women's singles draw at Flushing Meadows.
Never discount the value of home ground advantage, particularly with Serena Williams making a major comeback.
