2009 US Open Betting Preview

The 2009 US Open Tennis Championships kick off on Monday the 31st of August at Flushing Meadows in New York. The year’s final grand slam in not just one of the tennis highlights of the year, it also provides the last major tennis betting opportunity of the season.

Outright betting markets for the mens’ and womens’ singles draws at the 2009 US Open have been open for several weeks, with position in the US Open betting markets tending to reflect the rankings on the WTA and ATP Tours.

Men’s Singles Betting
Roger Federer tops the men’s singles US Open betting market at average odds of 5/4. While these short odds don’t provide much value on a bet on Federer, they are a fairly accurate reflection of his prospects at the tournament.

Andy Murray is priced a little higher, at 3/1, but would still fail to provide real value on an each-way bet, and given his past tendency to choke at grand slams looks like a risky option to us. The first real value bet comes in the form of Rafael Nadal, who is priced at an average of 6/1 in the US Open outright betting markets.

We suggest placing each-way bets when betting on players other than Federer at the US Open. England’s top bookmakers are offering payouts up to second place on outright each-way bets, with half the stake paid out at ½ the odds if the selection makes the final and loses.

Ladies Singles Betting

The ladies singles US Open betting markets are far more open than those of their male counterparts. While Serena Williams is a strong favourite to win the tournament, her victory is by no means a done deal and several other players could take the title.

This means there’s plenty of value to be had for tennis fans looking to back the top women’s singles players. Every player in the draw will provide a profitable return on an each-way bet in the outright betting markets if they reach the final of the 2009 US Open.

At 7/1 Elena Dementieva is our pick to make the final. Not only does she offer great each way betting value, but she’s overdue a grand slam victory and has reached the final of the US Open twice before. Add to this the fact that she’s on a hot streak with a win at the Toronto Rogers Cup and she looks like one of the players to back.

Maria Sharapova is also tough to ignore. The former world number one has been priced 10/1 in the betting markets, and genuinely looks to be recapturing the form that saw her reach the summit of women’s tennis earlier in the decade.
